| Reverse description | Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Navarre and Béarn within an ornate shield surmounted by a crown, with the Roman numeral II appearing on either side of the shield in the field. The shield quarters display the characteristic chains of Navarre and the cattle of Béarn, rendered with fine detail despite the limitations of the hammered technique. The circumferential Latin legend GRATIA DEI SVM Q D SVM, followed by the date 1585, encircles the shield and is separated by dot stops. The legend translates as the biblical phrase 'By the grace of God, I am what I am,' a motto closely associated with Henry of Navarre. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and uneven strike typical of hammered silver production at the Pau mint. |
