Obverse description The Basel basilisk, depicted as a crowned dragon with spread wings and scaled body, stands in profile facing right, its tail curled beneath it. The creature's taloned feet grip the lower field, with one claw resting upon the oval city arms of Basel, which displays the bishop's crozier. The design is rendered in bold, high relief against a flat field, enclosed by a fine milled border of beads.
