Obverse description Left-facing portrait bust of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered after the original design by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. The effigy occupies the central field with the legend LIBERTY arching above and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the left. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR appear flanking the portrait, with the mint mark and designer's initials (JF, WC) positioned at the lower right of the truncation.
