Obverse description Left-facing effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in high relief after the classic portrait design originally by John Flanagan. The legend LIBERTY appears above the portrait, IN GOD WE TRUST to the left, and QUARTER DOLLAR below in the exergual area. The initials JF appear near the truncation of the bust, referencing the original designer. The field is smooth and deeply struck, befitting the bullion coin format.
