The War in the Pacific National Historical Park commemorates some of the most brutal amphibious combat of the Second World War — the 1944 Guam campaign cost over 7,000 American casualties and killed or captured the near-entirety of the Japanese garrison. Guam had been a U.S. territory seized by Japan within days of Pearl Harbor and held for nearly three years before its recapture.
This five-ounce silver issue is part of the America the Beautiful bullion program, the oversized companion to the circulating quarter series authorized under the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. The Guam park design was the final release in the program's 2019 schedule.
