Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, the first President of the United States, based on John Flanagan's classic portrait design first introduced in 1932. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in three lines to the right of the portrait, and LIBERTY is inscribed to the left. The San Francisco mint mark S is positioned below IN GOD WE TRUST, near the ribbon tying Washington's queue; the entire design is struck to brilliant proof quality with deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices.
