Reverse description The reverse depicts the pivotal moment of the British surrender at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, showing General John Burgoyne offering his sword to General Horatio Gates, a scene widely regarded as a turning point in the American Revolutionary War. The design, executed by Barbara Fox and Renata Gordon, renders the two figures in a naturalistic style against a suggestive landscape background. The legend SARATOGA arcs across the upper field, with BRITISH SURRENDER and the date 1777 inscribed in the central area. NEW YORK and the issue year 2015 appear in the lower field, while E PLURIBUS UNUM is placed along the lower rim. The designers' initials BF and RG are present in the field.
