Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, modeled after the 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon, occupies the central field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The inscription LIBERTY appears to the left of the portrait, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned in two lines to the right. The San Francisco Mint mark 'S' is situated below the motto, near the ribbon tying Washington's queue. The coin displays the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices characteristic of a proof strike.
