| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a scene inspired by Emanuel Leutze's celebrated 1851 painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware," showing General George Washington standing boldly in a boat as members of the Continental Army row across the icy Delaware River on the eve of a pivotal Revolutionary War engagement. The state name "NEW JERSEY" arcs across the top of the field, flanked by the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" at the upper right. The commemorative legend "CROSSROADS OF THE REVOLUTION" appears below the central design, with the state's year of admission to the Union "1787" and the coin's issue date "1999" inscribed in the lower field. The design was executed by Alfred Maletsky under the 50 State Quarters Program. |
