Obverse description Left-facing effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in high relief after the original design by John Flanagan as modified by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY arcs across the upper field, flanked by the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the left and the mint mark below the truncation of the bust. The designer's initials JF and WC appear at the base of the neck. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completing the peripheral legend.
