Reverse description A detailed outline map of the state of Michigan occupies the central field, rendered with textured surface detail to suggest the Lower and Upper Peninsulas surrounded by the contours of the Great Lakes system. The state name MICHIGAN arcs prominently along the upper periphery, accompanied by the statehood year 1837 beneath it. The inscriptions GREAT LAKES STATE appear to the right of the map in three lines, referencing Michigan's official nickname. The date 2004 and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appear along the lower rim. The engraver's initials DW are discretely placed in the lower right field.
