Reverse description A full-length effigy of Maria Tallchief, the celebrated Osage Nation prima ballerina, is depicted in mid-leap in an elegant grand jete pose, wearing a classical tutu, set against a circular background element suggesting a spotlight. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while MARIA TALLCHIEF appears in large letters below the central design. Beneath the honoree's name, her name is rendered in the Osage script. The mottoes E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR appear along the lower periphery. The designer's initials BS and JFM are visible in the lower field flanking the baseline.

Additional information

Maria Tallchief, an Osage Nation member from Oklahoma, became the first Native American to serve as prima ballerina of a major American company — the New York City Ballet — under George Balanchine, whom she married in 1946. Her inclusion in the American Women Quarters Program reflects a broader Congressional mandate, passed in 2020, to feature women whose contributions had been systematically overlooked on circulating coinage. The Osage Nation formally celebrated the announcement of her selection.

Tallchief died in 2013, a decade before this coin entered circulation.
