Reverse description A three-quarter facing bust of Jovita Idar, the Mexican-American civil rights activist, journalist, teacher, and nurse, dominates the field, her hair styled in an upswept braided coiffure. Her blouse and collar are artistically rendered as a typographic composition, with words and titles associated with her legacy — including JOVITA IDAR, MEXICAN AMERICAN, RIGHTS, TEACHER, NURSE, EVOLUCIÓN, ASTREA, EL HERALDO CRISTIANO, LA CRUZ BLANCA, JOURNALIST, LA CRÓNICA, EL PROGRESO, and LA LIGA FEMENIL MEXICANISTA — integrated organically into the design in varying orientations and scales. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR and motto E PLURIBUS UNUM are incorporated within the typographic elements, and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the lower rim.

Additional information

Jovita Idar was a Mexican-American journalist and civil rights activist from Laredo, Texas, who in 1914 physically blocked Texas Rangers from destroying the printing press of her newspaper, La Crónica, after it published articles condemning the lynching of Mexicans along the border. The Rangers returned the following day when she was absent and demolished it anyway. She is the twenty-third subject in the American Women Quarters Program, authorized by Congress in 2020 to run through 2025.
