Obverse description The obverse bears the left-facing portrait bust of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in the classical style originally designed by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY appears above the effigy, while IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the left of the portrait. The mint mark, designer initials WC and JF, and the date appear in the lower field. The encircling legend reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with QUARTER DOLLAR arcing along the lower rim.
