| Reverse description | The central device depicts a dramatic volcanic eruption scene representing Kilauea, the shield volcano within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, with lava and volcanic ejecta bursting upward from the vent in a fan-shaped plume. Rugged lava flows and hardened basaltic rock formations occupy the lower portion of the field. The legend 'HAWAI'I VOLCANOES' arcs boldly along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while 'HAWAII' appears at the lower left and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' at the lower right. The date '2012' is inscribed at the base of the design. |

The Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park quarter was released as part of the America the Beautiful series, which Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021 — a program explicitly modeled on the success of the 50 State Quarters but stretched across national parks and federal sites. The silver proof versions, struck at San Francisco, were sold directly to collectors and never entered circulation. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes was the fourth of five 2012 releases, honoring a park that sits atop one of the most active volcanic systems on earth, where Kīlauea has been erupting near-continuously since 1983.
