Reverse description The central design depicts an erupting volcano — Kilauea — with lava fountains and billowing ash clouds rising dramatically from the summit, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation rendered in fine detail. Rugged lava fields and rock formations occupy the lower foreground, conveying the raw geological power of the park. The legend HAWAI'I VOLCANOES arcs along the upper periphery, while HAWAII appears at the lower left and E PLURIBUS UNUM at the lower right, flanking the date 2012 at the base. The design was engraved by Charles Lessie Vickers and commemorates Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters program.
