| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the historic John Brown's Fort, a fire-engine house that served as the site of abolitionist John Brown's last stand during his raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1859, rendered in a detailed landscape composition. The structure is shown in three-quarter perspective, surrounded by naturalistic ground elements evoking the historical site. The legend HARPERS FERRY arcs along the upper rim, with WEST VIRGINIA inscribed below it, and JOHN BROWN'S FORT appearing in the field above the structure. The date 2016 and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM are inscribed in the lower portion of the field, with the engraver's initials PH (Phebe Hemphill) present in the design. The composition is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program honoring Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. |
