Obverse description The obverse features the left-facing portrait bust of George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789–1797), based on John Flanagan's classic 1932 design as modified by William Cousins. The legend 'LIBERTY' appears above the effigy, while 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is inscribed to the left of the portrait. The mint mark and the engravers' initials 'D JF WC' appear on the truncation of the neck. The face value 'QUARTER DOLLAR' is inscribed along the lower rim, and the legend 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' arcs across the upper field.
