Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, modeled after the 1786 Houdon bust, occupies the center of the field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two stacked lines to the right of Washington's queue, and the word LIBERTY is inscribed to the left of the effigy. Washington's hair is depicted in colonial style, tied with a ribbon at the nape, with fine wave and curl detail rendered in high relief consistent with this enlarged five-ounce format.
