Reverse description The reverse depicts Frederick Douglass, the prominent abolitionist and statesman, seated at a writing desk in three-quarter view, with his historic home Cedar Hill in the Washington, D.C. background rendered in fine detail. The legend FREDERICK DOUGLASS arcs across the upper field, with DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA inscribed below the central device. The date 2017 and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appear in the lower portion of the field, accompanied by the engravers' initials TRH and PH. The design was executed by Thomas Hipschen and Phebe Hemphill for the America the Beautiful 5-ounce silver bullion series.
