Additional information

The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, designated by Congress in 1980 and later renamed to honor the Idaho senator who championed its protection, is the largest contiguous wilderness area in the contiguous United States at roughly 2.4 million acres. Church himself was a four-term Democrat who had made his national reputation chairing the Senate committee that exposed CIA assassination plots and illegal domestic surveillance programs in the mid-1970s — not the obvious biography for a wilderness honoree, but the Idaho backcountry was his genuine passion.

The .999 silver version of this issue was struck at Philadelphia exclusively for collector sets, never reaching circulation.
