Obverse description Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, based on the classic portrait by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins, occupies the central field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, while LIBERTY appears to the left of the portrait and QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in three lines to the right of Washington's neck. The San Francisco Mint mark 'S' is positioned below the motto, just above the lower legend. The portrait exhibits Washington's characteristic queue hairstyle and strong classical profile, rendered with the heightened relief and frosted devices characteristic of proof coinage.
