| Obverse description | The obverse features the left-facing effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in high relief in proof quality. The legend LIBERTY appears above the portrait, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST positioned to the left of the bust. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR arcs along the lower rim, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery. The mint mark S, denoting the San Francisco Mint, appears below the ribbon of Washington's queue. The design is based on John Flanagan's classic portrait, first introduced on the quarter in 1932. |
