Reverse description The reverse, engraved by Phebe Hemphill, depicts an immigrant family standing at the threshold of Ellis Island, rendered with emotional narrative detail conveying both hope and apprehension upon arrival in the United States. The Main Building of the Ellis Island Immigration Station is prominently featured in the background, accurately rendered as the Beaux-Arts landmark familiar to millions of immigrants. The inscription ELLIS ISLAND arcs above the central design, while NEW JERSEY appears below, identifying the state park designation. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the date 2017 are also present in the field, along with the designer's initials BF and PH.

Additional information

The Ellis Island site presented an unusual jurisdictional problem that took decades and a Supreme Court case to resolve. Though physically closer to New Jersey, the island was long administered as part of New York — until New Jersey v. New York (1998) awarded the bulk of the landfill expansion to New Jersey, splitting the monument between two states. It is that New Jersey attribution that places this coin in the America the Beautiful series under the Garden State's allocation, not New York's.

The five-ounce .999 silver bullion format was introduced with the series in 2010, struck at Philadelphia with a "P" mintmark on the bullion version.
