| Additional information |
Sally Ride, who died in 2012, was the first American woman in space — a distinction earned aboard the Challenger's STS-7 mission in June 1983. She was also, posthumously, the first known LGBTQ+ person honored on U.S. circulating coinage, a fact her estate confirmed only after her death when her long-term partner Tam O'Shaughnessy was publicly acknowledged. This quarter was issued under the American Women Quarters program, authorized by Congress in 2020 to replace the previous America the Beautiful series.
The .999 silver strikes were produced for collector sets only — no silver-composition pieces entered circulation.
