Obverse description Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), modeled after the original design by John Flanagan and updated by William Cousins in 1997. The legend LIBERTY arches across the upper field, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST inscribed vertically to the left of the portrait. The mint mark appears below the portrait, and the designer's initials JF and WC are incused near the truncation of the bust. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches above, while QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower rim.
