Obverse description Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, the first President of the United States, rendered in high relief with finely detailed flowing hair tied at the nape with a ribbon bow. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. The word LIBERTY appears to the left of the portrait in the mid-field, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned to the right. The San Francisco Mint mark S is situated below the motto, near the truncation of the bust; the engraver's initials JF are visible at the base of the portrait.
