Obverse description Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, based on John Flanagan's classic design derived from the Houdon bust. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, with QUARTER DOLLAR inscribed along the lower periphery. LIBERTY appears in the left field, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned in two lines to the right of Washington's queue. The Philadelphia Mint mark P appears below the motto, and the designer's initials JF are incuse at the base of Washington's neck truncation. The coin exhibits the distinctive golden tone of the experimental manganese brass clad copper composition.
