The Bombay Hook quarter is part of the America the Beautiful series, which Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021 — five designs per year, cycling through national parks, monuments, and federally protected lands across all fifty states and territories. Delaware's slot in 2015 went to Bombay Hook, one of the oldest federal wildlife refuges in the country, established in 1937 under the Migratory Bird Conservation Act. The name itself derives from a Dutch colonial phonetic rendering of "Bamboohook," from the Lenape word for a small inlet.
The .900 silver proof version was struck exclusively at San Francisco.
