Obverse description The obverse features the left-facing bust of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), based on the portrait originally designed by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. The legend 'LIBERTY' appears above the effigy at the upper left, while 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is inscribed to the right of the portrait. The face value 'QUARTER DOLLAR' is positioned along the lower rim, and the encircling legend 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' arcs across the upper field. The mint mark and designers' initials 'D', 'JF', and 'WCc' appear in the field.
