Reverse description The reverse features a central portrait of Helen Keller seated in a chair, reading a Braille book, rendered in a naturalistic style by engraver Norman E. Nemeth. To the left stands a longleaf pine branch bearing pine cones, the state tree of Alabama, and to the right blooms the camellia, the state flower. The name HELEN KELLER appears in Latin script to the right of the figure, accompanied above by the same name rendered in Braille characters, making this the first U.S. circulating coin to incorporate Braille. A banner below the figure bears the motto SPIRIT OF COURAGE, while the state name ALABAMA and its year of statehood 1819 arc along the upper rim; the date 2003, engraver's initials NEN, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appear along the lower field and rim.
