| Additional information |
Liberia's 1865 pattern coinage was produced in Philadelphia, where the Liberian government had contracted American mints and private firms to strike its currency since the republic's earliest decades — the country had no domestic minting capability. The 1865 date places this squarely in a period of severe financial strain for Monrovia, as the republic struggled to maintain creditworthiness with foreign merchants and sustain even basic monetary infrastructure.
Patterns of this type rarely moved beyond a handful of presentation or trial specimens, most retained by the contracting parties or government officials.
