Obverse description The obverse features the Seated Liberty design, depicting a draped figure of Liberty seated left upon a rock, holding a shield inscribed with horizontal stripes in her left hand and a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap in her right. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery, with the date appearing in the exergue below. A fleur-de-lys counterstamp, applied by Puerto Rican authorities beginning in 1884, is struck into the field of the host coin. The legend LIBERTY appears on a scroll across the shield.
