Selim II's accession in 1566 — the same year this coin was struck — marked the beginning of an Ottoman reign that delegated enormous military and fiscal autonomy to the Barbary Regencies. Algiers at this moment was less a province than a semi-independent naval power, its treasury fed largely by corsair tribute and ransom rather than conventional taxation. The fractional dinar denominations from this period served that economy directly, circulating among merchants and intermediaries in a port city processing ransomed Europeans and Mediterranean plunder simultaneously.
The .625 fineness is notably debased relative to earlier Hafsid gold standards, reflecting Algiers' pragmatic approach to bullion management under its new Ottoman overlordship.
