Struck to mark Hussein bin Talal's 25th year on the Hashemite throne, this issue commemorates a reign that had already survived the 1957 attempted coup, the catastrophic loss of the West Bank in 1967, and Black September in 1970 — a civil war that nearly ended the kingdom entirely. That Hussein was still on the throne in 1977 to celebrate anything at all was, by any measure, not inevitable.
