Zierikzee endured a Spanish siege from October 1575 into the summer of 1576, during which the town's defenders were cut off long enough to require emergency coinage. Klippe — square-cut blanks produced from sheet silver rather than cast or rolled planchets — are the hallmark of siege mints working under duress, where proper round flan production was impractical or impossible. The silver was almost certainly sourced from melted plate and ecclesiastical objects.
The town surrendered to Mondragon's forces in July 1576 after the relief fleet failed. Very few siege issues from Zierikzee survive in any grade.
