Obverse description A rampant lion passant-rampant to the left occupies the central field, rendered in bold relief typical of mid-sixteenth-century hammered Low Countries coinage. The lion is depicted with flowing mane, extended claws, and a raised tail, set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads + MONETA ❀ NOVA ❀ ARGENTEA ❀ • DO ❀ I ❀ G, identifying this as the new silver coinage of the Lord of Gronsveld. The lettering is in Gothic-influenced Latin characters separated by floral or rosette stops.
