Obverse description Central field dominated by the Burgundian cross (croix de Bourgogne), formed by two crossed, knotted and flamed staves, with the date 1590 divided horizontally across the cross arms. A royal crown surmounts the cross at the top. Four decorative fleurs-de-lis or foliate ornaments occupy the angles between the cross arms. The circumferential legend in Latin runs around the full periphery of the coin within a toothed border.
