The 1845 quarter cent was among the first coins struck for British India under Victoria's name, issued as the East India Company moved to rationalize the subcontinent's chaotic multi-denomination coinage following the Currency Act of 1835. The Calcutta Mint produced these in the same year it was finally brought under direct Company control, ending a long period of decentralized striking at presidencies with inconsistent standards.
The denomination itself had a short operational life — too small for practical commerce in most of India, it was quietly abandoned within a few years.
