Obverse description A plain cross pattée occupies the central field, rendered in crude hammered style characteristic of Portuguese colonial coinage. The cross arms extend nearly to the coin's border, which is formed by a ring of raised pellets or beads encircling the entire design. The overall execution is irregular, reflecting the primitive minting conditions of the Ceilão (Ceylon) mint during the reign of João III.
