Obverse description Left-facing armored bust of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The subject is depicted wearing a period morion helmet with a pronounced comb and gorget of mail visible at the truncation, with armor plate evident on the shoulder. A spray of laurel or floral sprigs flanks the bust at lower left and lower right. The curved legend arcs around the upper periphery, reading 'VN . CVARTO . DE . BALBOA', executed in bold serif capitals with dot separators. The overall design is consistent with the standard Panamanian quarter-balboa obverse type, here struck as a uniface piefort pattern.
