| Reverse description | A left-facing armoured bust of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador and first European to cross the Isthmus of Panama and reach the Pacific Ocean by land in 1513, dominates the central field. He is depicted wearing a period helmet and armour. The circular legend surrounding the bust reads UN · CUARTO · DE · BALBOA on earlier issues (KM#128.1) or UN · CUARTO · DE · BALBOA on later issues (KM#128.2), with the lettering style varying between archaic VN CVARTO and modern UN CUARTO orthography. A small wreathed ornamental device appears at the base of the bust, touching the lower rim. |
