| Obverse lettering | السّلطان اسمعیل ۱۱۶۶ |
| Reverse description | The reverse displays a multi-line Arabic pious legend in bold Naskh script filling the entire field, reading the royal prayer and identifying the Mazandaran mint with the date 1166 AH. The inscription is struck in high relief with the characteristic overlapping calligraphic strokes of late Safavid hammered coinage. A dotted inner border encircles the legend, following the contour of the irregularly shaped flan. A small floral or rosette ornamental device is visible at the lower portion of the field beneath the main legend. The reverse, like the obverse, bears no figural imagery in accordance with Shia Islamic artistic conventions of the Safavid court. |
