India's quarter anna coinage was already an anachronism by 1940 — the denomination had been functionally worthless for decades, surviving largely through institutional inertia rather than commercial necessity. When bronze replaced the earlier composition during this run, it was driven by wartime material constraints rather than any monetary policy logic. Copper-nickel and other alloys were under pressure across British imperial mints as the war economy tightened.
KM#531 represents the final years of the quarter anna's existence; the denomination was abolished with the 1947 coinage reforms that preceded independence.
