Obverse description Draped bust of Emperor Menelik II facing right, wearing an elaborate imperial crown with radiate rays emanating from behind the head, filling the field. The effigy is rendered in moderate relief with visible portraiture detail including ear and collar. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the bust, reading the imperial titulature and the Ethiopian year of 1889 (E.C.), engraved by Jean Lagrange.

Obverse lettering ዳግማዊ፡ምኒልክ፡ ንጉሠ ፡ ነገሥት ፡ ዘኢትዮጵያ። ፲፰፻፹፱
(Translation: His Imperial Majesty Menelik, King of Kings of Ethiopia 1889)
Reverse description The Lion of Judah passant left, wearing an imperial crown atop its head, with its right forepaw raised and resting upon a ceremonial staff or sceptre surmounted by a cross. The lion is depicted in bold relief against a plain field, enclosed by a beaded border. A Ge'ez circular legend above names the conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, and the denomination is inscribed in the lower field.
