| Obverse description | The obverse features the quartered arms of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg within an ornate baroque shield, surmounted by a ducal crown. The four quarters display the traditional dynastic devices of the Ernestine Saxon line, including horizontal barry and diagonal barry fields associated with the Saxon arms, together with a rampant lion and an eagle displayed in the lower quarters. Two elaborate foliate helm ornaments flank the crowned shield. The encircling Latin legend reads FRIDERIC·D G·DVX·SAX·IVL·CLIV·ET MONT, identifying Duke Frederick I by his full titulature, separated by pellet stops. |
