Obverse description The prancing horse of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, the dynastic arms of the House of Welf, is depicted in left profile occupying the central field, rendered in high relief with animated posture. The horse stands on a ground line above the mintmaster's initials, here visible as F·D·B· at the base. A beaded inner border frames the design, with a finely milled outer border. The encircling Latin legend reads CAROLUS D G DVX B ET L I D B, identifying the issuing duke.
