Adolphus Frederick III ruled Mecklenburg-Strelitz for less than a decade before his death in 1752, and his coinage output was correspondingly thin. The 1/24 Thaler denomination — the Groschen equivalent in the northern German reckoning — served the small-change needs of one of the most territorially modest duchies in the Holy Roman Empire. Mecklenburg-Strelitz had been partitioned from Mecklenburg-Schwerin only in 1701, and its minting activity throughout the eighteenth century reflected the fiscal constraints of a court perpetually outpaced by its larger neighbors.
