| Obverse description | The obverse displays the elaborate civic arms of Brunswick within an ornate cartouche: a crowned lion rampant occupying the lower shield, with additional heraldic elements above, all surrounded by decorative baroque strapwork and foliate mantling. The composition is rendered in the vigorous, slightly crude style typical of late sixteenth-century German municipal hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, interrupted by pellet stops, reading MONE NOV BRUNSWI, proclaiming this as new coinage of Brunswick. The field is crowded by the bold heraldic device, leaving little open space, consistent with the dense design aesthetic of the period. |
