Obverse description Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Philip II of Spain — incorporating the castles of Castile, lions of León, fleurs-de-lis of Burgundy, and the diagonal bars of Aragon — surmounted by an ornate royal crown. The collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece encircles the shield, its pendant fleece visible at the base. The heraldic composition is rendered in the boldly struck, somewhat crude style typical of hammered Low Countries coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, interrupted by the irregular flan edge.
